CHENNAI: The much-awaited satellite bus terminus for south-bound buses is mostly likely to come up at Urapakkam after the Supreme Court gave a favourable verdict, upholding acquisition of land from a private company.
Construction of the satellite bus terminus was delayed for years due to hurdles in finding suitable land for the project. At least five alternative sites were considered in various southern suburbs of the city as at each site the officials faced one or another problem. The latest site the officials were eyeing was the land belonging to a temple at Nandivaram near Guduvancherry.
But as a boost to the project, the Supreme Court delivered a favourable verdict upholding the acquisition of a land at Urapakkam, one of the earlier sites preferred by the government. The land owner, VGP Housing Private Ltd, challenged the acquisition and the case was pending in the Supreme Court. Sources said the State government hired a senior counsel to fight the case in the apex court.
The site at Urapakkam is spread over 88.52 acres and besides the satellite bus terminus, the government might also plan a few other projects for public transport.
After obtaining the copy of the Supreme Court’s August 30 verdict, the Revenue Department passed an order on Wednesdaytransferring the land to the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority. A board was also put up on the site warning against tresspassing.
“This was to fulfil the announcement of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, made in the assembly to set up a bus terminal for south-bound buses in the location,” a senior official said.
“How much the CMDA will pay for the land would be evaluated later,” said sources in the Revenue Department. Interestingly, the credit goes to Revenue Department officials, who were proactive immediately after getting the court order and started the work to hand over the land to CMDA despite three closed holidays.
“The work for building the bus terminus has started now. A JCB was pressed into service to clear the area,” revenue officials said. Sources said that now the government would go in for a consultant to develop the bus terminus and a number of other infrastructure projects including monorail
